Alcoa under Investigation in the USA for Allegedly Paying Bribes to Public Officials in Bahrain

In March 2008, it was reported that Alcoa Inc., the world’s third-largest aluminium, producer and largest producer of alumina, was under criminal investigation in the USA over accusations that the company bribed officials in Bahrain in an effort to obtain business. The evidence came to light as a result of legal action taken in February 2008 by a domestic competitor, Aluminum Bahrain BSC (Alba), which claimed that Alcoa had bribed unidentified Bahraini government officials and overcharged for alumina (used to make aluminium) over a period of fifteen years.
