BAE Systems under Investigation in the UK for Allegedly Paying Bribes in Romania

In the UK in February 2007, Mike O'Brien the Solicitor General confirmed earlier reports that BAE was under investigation for corruption in relation to sales to Romania.

In June 2006, the Guardian newspaper reported that anti-corruption investigators had found an estimated £20,000 in Euros at the home of the BAE agent responsible for the sale of two British frigates to Romania in 2003 and that it was "alleged that BAE paid £7m in secret "commissions" offshore to unknown recipients, and was then handed £116m by the Romanian government to refurbish the ships".

According to the Guardian, the Romanian governments borrowed from Deutsche Bank to finance the BAE deal, with British government backing from the Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD).
