General des Eaux in Angouleme, France

In July 1997, the former Socialist junior minister Jean-Michel Boucheron was jailed for two years, with another two suspended, and fined one million francs (Dollars 172,000) for taking bribes from companies bidding in public tenders. Boucheron was an ex-minister for territorial administration and the former mayor of the southwestern town of Angouleme.

The Paris court found him guilty of taking bribes worth about 550,000 francs (Dollars 100,000) in 1986-89 from various companies.

It said he also received fees of 327,000 francs (Dollars 55,000) for a fictitious job by Compagnie Generale des Eaux in exchange for giving the utility a water distribution contract in Angouleme.
