UK: New Corruption Bill

On 23rd May 2006, in the UK, Hugh Bayley MP won the support of the House of Commons to introduce a Corruption Bill under the 10-Minute Rule. The Bill was sponsored by a cross-party group of MPs, including the Chairs of the Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs and International Development Select Committees, and was prepared by Transparency International (UK).

The Bill aimed to reform the law of bribery, responding to public concern that the UK’s anti-corruption legislation is inadequate.

It defined bribery with reference to the improper conduct that is intended to result from the payment of a bribe and introduced new elements in the UK's anti-corruption law, including an offence of bribery of foreign public officials (in line with the requirements of the OECD and UN Conventions) and an offence of foreign bid-rigging in competitive tendering.

A Press Release containing detailed notes on the aims and content of the Bill is presented in the sources below.
