The Ilisu Dam : Corruption Case

On November 13 2001, the international engineering, construction and services group, UK-based Balfour Beatty, announced that it was withdrawing from the controversial Ilisu dam project in Turkey.

Commenting on the decision, Balfour Beatty Chief Executive Mike Welton said: 'Our determination to consider this project in a thorough and professional manner has remained consistent since we were first invited to become involved.

News of Balfour Beatty's withdrawal was met with celebration by NGOs, who had been campaigning for the project to be stopped on social and environmental grounds.
